The paper describes a method for the selenographic referencing of lunar images which uses the earth and requires only information contained in the image itself, i.e., the method dispenses with trajectory data and reference points on the lunar surface. The method was used to determine the selenographic coordinates of 18 points on the basis of two images obtained with the Zond-8 probe. The accuracy of the coordinate determination is studied by means of a comparison with available catalog data.
