A photochemical model of the F1 region is proposed, in which neutral molecular concentration plays the dominant role in determining the shape of the profile of O(+) concentration to electron concentration ratio (p). Because of the strong control by the neutral molecular concentration profiles and because of the exponential nature of their profile shapes, p is shown to be adequately characterized by a parameter z(50) defining the altitude where p equals 0.5 and a parameter H(inf) defining the thickness of the transition from p equals 0 to p equals 1. All available rocket data on F1 ion composition are then analyzed in terms of solar zenith angle and seasonal variations. These deduced seasonal variations are compared with those derived from the photochemical model.
