Most of the dominant physical processes which may affect a comet after its formation are reviewed in order to gain a better understanding of cometary properties in preparation for future cometary missions, such as Rosetta - Comet Nucleus Sample Return. The history of an evolved nucleus is traced in order to determine a realistic picture of the possible 'landscape' encountered on the surface, and at depth, of a comet. Processes affecting a cometary nucleus just after formation, during storage in the Oort cloud, and during the approach to the sun are illustrated. Tables showing the possible processes affecting a just-formed cometary nucleus and a comet stored in the Oort cloud are presented.
