Theoretical models for the structure and properties of extragalactic double radio sources are compared with observations of these objects. It is shown that the twin exhaust model of Blandford and Rees (1974) adequately explains the data. The model is refined through the introduction of parameters related to constraints imposed by observations. Time dependent special relativistic equations for the motion of a relativistic fluid through channels of variable and changing cross section are then derived. The coupled evolution equations are nondimensionalized and a scaling law relating configurations of a constant reduced luminosity at specific dimensionless times is predicted. This system of equations is then solved numerically. Models for many different values of internal luminosity and for differing parameters of the confining mass of gas (size, density, temperature, shape) are computed, and the scaling law is verified. Finally, the possible sources of energy and plasma proposed for such objects are examined.
