Representativity of point observations, whether satellite, airplane or ground based, remains an issue in the use of these data in emission verification systems for greenhouse gases. Recent advances in the use of high resolution input data regarding emissions and meteorology, and improvements in global and regional transport models are confronted with the growing set of high precision observations at (tall) towers in Europe. Important potential improvements using 222Rn observations for model calibration and trajectory clustering in the Comet and Flexpart models are discussed. Another important issue to be solved is the network density (in time and space) required to improve the uncertainty of emission estimates in inversion systems. We will use the Comet inverse source aggregation system to test the potential of the current CarboEurope-IP and future ICOS concentration observation infrastructure when using this system to improve CH4 and CO2 assimilation emission estimates for Europe.
