We present the theoretical effective area for the RGS over the instruments's 5 to 35 Angstrom band with a comparison to the calibration data taken at the Panter facility in Munich. The effective area has been calculated from theoretical models of the mirror reflectivity, grating efficiency, and detector quantum efficiency for the alignment geometry. This model agrees with the calibration data to better than 5% at first and second order for wavelengths longer than 9 Angstroms. The model underpredicts the effective area at shorter wavelengths, most probably because our theoretical treatment of grating scatter is inappropriate in this region. We discuss our plans for further improvements to the model, and our flight calibration program.
