A numerical 'spectral' method is proposed for modeling the midlatitude ionosphere. The method is a time-dependent and altitude-dependent polynomial expansion applied to an ionosphere having the same physical conditions, electron and ion temperatures, neutral wind, and electric field as those observed by the Saint-Santin coherent scatter sounder during selected days. The vertical velocities of the ions are determined by an equation for momentum transfer (option 1) or by soundings (option 2). Option 2 is found to produce a better fit with measurements which indicate that large changes in the neutral wind and in the electric field from one day to the next result in fluctuations in the ionization profiles on the order of 20 percent.
