The paper presents results of the simulation of oblique backscatter sounding (OBS) of the ionosphere on a midlatitude eastward path 12 Mm in length in the complete diurnal cycle. It is shown that the geometrical-optics approach gives satisfactory results when smoothed models of the ionosphere and mean stochastic characteristics of experimental OBS signals are used.
