Results are presented of correlations between experimental ionograms of tilted multifrequency sounding at the Moscow-Dickson path and the ionograms modeled for an empirical ionospheric model SMI-88, which takes into account the characteristics of the large-scale inhomogeneous structure of the polar ionosphere. The features of an oblique sounding ionogram, caused by the regular and the abnormal propagation mechanisms, are discussed. Particular attention is given to the diurnal variation of the most useful frequency for various distribution modes. It is shown that the error in the determinations of this frequency by SMI-88 did not exceed 25 percent.
