The problem of electromagnetic field calculations is solved for two models, one involving a horizontally inhomogeneous layer of arbitrary finite thickness over a homogeneous conducting base, the other a horizontally inhomogeneous layer, also of arbitrary thickness, over a horizontally stratified medium. For the systems of integral equations obtained, the existence, uniqueness, and method of solution are discussed in relation to the spectral densities of the field components. It is noted that in the body of theory for interpreting the results of magnetotelluric and magnetovariational investigations, an important trend has to do with the development of numerical models for electromagnetic fields in three-dimensionally-inhomogeneous media.
