A mathematical method for investigating the three-dimensional structure of a planetary nebula on the basis of its plane isophote configuration, is refined by relaxing the hypothesis of uniform density. The algorithm is tested using the H alpha isophotes of the planetary nebula NGC 7662, and the variable-density model is found to significantly improve the quality of the empirical pattern that is reproduced
