An approximate method for modeling the equatorial ionosphere is proposed whereby the equation of continuity along a tube of force is reduced to an equation in terms of the height variable. A comparison is made between the parameters of the maximum of the F2 layer (concentration at maximum and maximum height) obtained by using the exact equation of continuity and its approximate version proposed here. It is shown that the approximate method provides sufficient accuracy in the case of hybrid ionospheric models.
