Mars Atmosphere: Solar Wind
Scientific paper
The possible effect of the neutral atmosphere of Mars on interaction with the solar wind is studied. It is shown that even with a planetary magnetic field, the neutral atmosphere plays a role in solar wind interaction for high dynamic solar wind pressures, for near-equatorial cusps in the Martian magnetosphere, and on the dayside "bald" spot. The position of the shock wave front near Mars is determined assuming that the boundary decelerating the solar wind is located at a height of 300 km above the surface of the planet, where the solar wind loading occurs in the transitional region due to photoionization of the Martian neutral atmosphere and overcharging of solar wind protons with neutral hydrogen. It is shown that solar wind loading due to photoionization shifts the front from the planet, while overcharging will put the front in the subsolar region and shift it to the terminator, which is expected. However, the significance of the latter process is small in comparison with that of heavy ion photoionization.
