A two-component representation is used to model the dynamics of the current systems of a polar substorm: (1) a two-layer structure of field-aligned currents (the preliminary phase of the substorm); and (2) a Birkeland loop of currents (the explosive phase). Emphasis is placed on the modeling of the transition from the DP12 system to the DP12 + DP11 system which characterizes the development of a polar substorm. An analysis is presented of the electric fields generated by field-aligned currents in the ionosphere and of corresponding equivalent current systems.
