We use high resolution simulations to study kinematic properties of the low ionization species in damped Lyα systems. Our adaptive mesh refinement simulations include all key ingredients relevant for modeling neutral gas in high-column density absorbers, including hydrodynamics, gravitational collapse, full continuum radiative transfer above the hydrogen Lyman limit and non-equilibrium chemistry. The redshift evolution of the column density distribution marked by hierarchical galaxy formation at z=4-2 matches observations very well. However, we find that the modeled galaxy population in the 108-1011 Msun mass range does not reproduce the high-end tail of the observed velocity width distribution of low ions meaning that larger volume samples with the current mass resolution will be needed.
