Dramatic increases in the total radiated energies were seen in Al wire array experiments on the Saturn generator at Sandia National Laboratories when it was operated in a long current-risetime mode (>= 140 ns) as opposed to a short-risetime mode. This enhanced energy output requires an enhanced coupling of the Saturn generator to the Z-pinch plasma as well as an efficient and enhanced transport of the coupled energy into the plasma. One mechanism for enhancing generator coupling is through the growth of micro-instabilities at the pinch surface. To investigate the applicability of this idea, three series of long-risetime Al experiments are analyzed. In one series, array masses were varied; in another, radius and mass changes were made; in the third, array lengths were varied. In each series, all other load parameters were held fixed. These implosions are modeled using a 1-D MHD code that includes enhanced energy coupling and energy transport due to surface micro-instabilities. Results will be presented that illustrate the process by which enhanced energy couplings lead to enhanced x-ray outputs and that compare the x-ray data trends seen in the long-risetime experiments with those seen in the modeling. plasmas. calculations
