A model of the fine-grain component of the Martian soil is proposed in order to explain the mechanism of the evolution of the gases revealed in the GEX and GCMS experiments of the Viking landers. It is proposed that the Mars fines is a substance in which each grain is permeated with micropores of radius between several units and several tens of angstroms and of length about 1,000 A. They may arise from a transfer of dissolved gas molecules from the grain bulk into lattice defects.
