An optical scanning device with the capability of identifying the
brightest stars in its field of view is discussed. Highly sensitive
single diodes with a field of view of 2 deg are used allowing a
positional accuracy for the entire device of 2 min. Data on 1400 stars
were collected and stored on magnetic tape, for simulating and testing.
