A guideline for the understanding of the often complex relationships between the requirements and the design parameters of a stereo camera for planetary remote sensing such as the High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) proposed for the Mars 94 mission is given. Many questions arising during design, fabrication and operations can only be answered by calculations and numerical simulations. As a result, an attempt was made to establish a modular software package of model calculations which yield all their results as easily understandable plots. The model calculations include astronomical parameters, orbit data, viewing geometry, radiometry, contrast assessmennts, camera operations, and image analysis aspects.
