We have measured modal abundances in the same suite of diogenites analyzed by Fowler et al. using automated electron microprobe phase distribution analysis. The automated electron microprobe technique determines the volume percent of low abundance phases with a high degree of accuracy. The diogenites are all high in modal orthopyroxene (92%). One of the so called olivine diogenites (ALH 77256) shows no higher modal olivine than the bulk of the diogenites analyzed. This suggests sampling bias may be the reason for the apparent presence of olivine diogenites. Plagioclase feldspar modal abundance is extremely low (0.4%). Phosphates are present also in very low abundance (0.01%). One sample has an anomalously large abundance of a high-Si phase (19%). Another sample previously reclassified as a howardite showed anomalously high plagioclase and clinopyroxene modal abundances. The modes confirm the assertion that diogenites are extremely low in feldspar, which is consistent with the scenario that the source of the melts, parental to diogenites, is a depleted source that previously experienced eucrite removal.
