We have fabricated a transition-edge sensor (TES) made of Al doped with Mn. The Mn suppresses the superconducting critical temperature, Tc, of Al from 1 K to 100 mK. The detector exhibits low-frequency noise consistent with theory. The detector is also surprisingly insensitive to applied magnetic fields. The use of AlMn alloy films in arrays of TES detectors has advantages in simplicity of fabrication when compared to traditional bilayer fabrication techniques. An array of such detectors form the basis of an instrument capable of making observations of the Sun with a combination of X-ray imaging and highly sensitive X-ray spectroscopy.
