Minor planet 10001 was discovered on October 8 1969 at the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory with the 40-cm double astrograph and received the preliminary designation 1969TM1. Its average diameter is about 6 km and it is orbiting at the mean distance of 2.378 a.u. from the sun with a period of 3.67 years. After the naming of 1000 Piazzi in honour of the discoverer of 1 Ceres, to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the discovery, minor planet 10001 is dedicated to the town of Palermo in honour of the site of observations.
