The observed characteristics of the six msec pulsars (MSPs) detected so far are summarized, and results from recent MSP search campaigns and unbiased radio surveys are reviewed. It is pointed out that MSPs are important as sources of information constraining theoretical models of neutron-star physics, as stable astrophysical 'clocks,' and as probes of close binary systems. The need for further observations is indicated, including low-frequency searches for nearby MSPs, deep searches of globular clusters, and a large-scale unbiased survey program (e.g., at 408 MHz with sensitivity 10 mJy). The potential role of the Italian Northern Cross radio telescope in such observations is briefly discussed.
