Cross-correlation of large Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) and Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) datasets by Heckman et al. (2005) resulted in the discovery of a new population of "compact UV-luminous galaxies" (UVLGs) at z 0.15 that are the rare local analogs of Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) at z 3. We report 1.2mm continuum observations of eight of these local systems, together with CO(1-0) mapping of six. Compact UVLGs appear to be weak but detectable dust sources, with obscuration similar to that of their high-redshift cousins and some diversity in terms of temperature. Our CO data hint at morphologies and kinematics that differ from those seen in the optical, and may ultimately enable tests of (a) how well the Kennicutt-Schmidt star formation law holds in these extreme starburst systems, and (b) to what extent the Galactic CO-to-H2 conversion factor varies with metallicity and/or IR luminosity in UV-selected galaxy populations.
