We present the first multiple frequency Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) polarization images of the superluminal quasars 3C273 and 3C345. In order to determine the Faraday rotation and reconstruct the inherent magnetic field direction within the milliarcsecond jets, we compared global MarkIII VLBI observations of these sources at 5 GHz and 8.4 GHz at near-simultaneous epochs, 10 June and 16 June 1990. The resulting images show common features in total intensity and linear polarization. Comparison of the polarization at the two frequencies shows that the linear polarization of the milliarcsecond jet of 3C345 undergoes little or no Faraday rotation. In contrast, the features in the milliarcsecond jet of 3C273 show rotation measures in the range of 0 to -300 radians per meter squared, with a gradient of about 75 radians per meter squared per milliarcsecond. These Faraday rotation measures are in addition to the small Faraday rotation measured using single dish observations. The inherent magnetic field direction in the quasar jet of 3C273 is more aligned with the jet than uncorrected position angles suggest. The rotation measure and its structure provide a direct probe of the narrow line region that surrounds the milliarcsecond jet. This work has been supported in part by the NSF and the AFOSR.
