Utilizing the Infrared capabilities of the Spitzer Space Telescope's Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) at 8.0 microns, we seek to find identify the number of asteroids with respect to distance from the ecliptic plane. To date, most asteroid surveys have been ground-based at optical wavelengths, which are limited in their ability to detect the strong mid-infrared emission from these Solar System bodies. These traditional studies, which are limited to measuring relatively bright, large objects, have suggested that number counts fall off quickly away from the ecliptic plane. We have mined the Spitzer archive for observations from zero to +/- 33 degrees ecliptic latitude. As the Spitzer pipeline is not designed to preserved moving objects in the final mosaiced datasets, we have assembled mosaics using in-house software and applied the the "RGB” technique to identify asteroids. Searches have been carried out in 5 degree intervals , and the results suggest that the number density of asteroids remains relatively consistent within several degrees of the ecliptic plane. We anticipate that more complete number counts should provide information on scale height and size distribution.
