An understanding of the processes controlling water vapour in the middle atmosphere requires coordinated in situ and global studies. The Hygrosonde-2 campaign was conducted from Esrange, Sweden, on December 16, 2001. Major focus was the detailed distribution of middle atmospheric water vapour and its relationship to the dynamics in the arctic winter. With rocket-borne, balloon-borne, and ground-based instruments, Hygrosonde-2 also served as a validation and a complement to the Odin satellite. We present here a preliminary discussion of results from disturbed conditions prior to a stratospheric warming.
