Observations of infrared radiation from the atmosphere's limb enable the distribution of minor constituents to be determined. The Limb Infrared Monitor of the Stratosphere (LIMS), the Stratospheric and Mesospheric Sounder (SAMS) instruments on Nimbus 7 contained channels for the measurement of temperature, H2O, O3, NO2, N2O, CH4, CO, and NO and HNO3. Some details of the problem of attitude determination are addressed and some preliminary results for atmospheric temperature, H2O, and HNO3 from SAMS and LIMS presented.
