One hundred and thirty two simple isolated magnetic bay events at Fredericksburg, Virginia, were studied in terms of their H, Z and D components and found to fall into several distinct groups. Nighttime bays are sharp, highly correlated with 18 MHz auroral absorption at mid-latitude stations, and their H and Z components reverse sign near 2100 hr LT. Daytime bays are generally diffuse and only slightly correlated with mid-latitude riometer absorption. The high degree of correspondence between sharp bays and riometer absorption suggests that the same precipitating particles may be responsible for both.
