The availability of large format infrared arrays originally on board the Infrared Space Observatory, and more recently on Spitzer Space Telescope, enabled for the first time the study of the spatial variation in the mid-infrared emission from nearby interacting galaxies. Comparison with detailed work in other wavelengths have shown that the mid-infrared spectral energy distribution in interacting galaxies can be used as an extinction free tracer not only of the location of the star formation activity but also of the physical mechanism dominating their energy production.
