A balloon-borne microwave radiometer has been constructed to measure the vertical distribution of water vapor (at 183 GHz) and ozone (at 184 GHz) in the upper atmosphere, over the altitude range from 17 to over 70 km. The instrument was flown during the MAP/GLOBUS campaign in France during September 1983. This paper describes the experiment and the results obtained, and compares these with previous measuremnts and current photochemical models of the upper atmosphere. Apart from suggesting a somewhat larger than expected increase in water-vapor mixing ratios in the lower stratosphere, the results are generally consistent with present understanding of the upper atmosphere.
