We propose to do spectroscopic and multi-band imaging follow-up of microlensing and supernova candidates identified on the CTIO 4m telescope by our SuperMACHO survey of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). The SuperMACHO team seeks to characterize the population of gravitational lenses responsible for the excess microlensing (ML) rate observed toward the LMC by the MACHO project. Follow-up observations of candidate sources will enable us to confirm the ML interpretation of events identified by the survey. The unique data set produced by SuperMACHO also enables many parallel scientific investigations. In particular, we have one of the most extensive sets of uniform, well- sampled, pre-maximum supernova (SN) type Ia light curves to date. With spectroscopy to confirm SN type and determine redshift, we will undertake one of the first systematic studies of rising behavior of SNe Ia with the aim of answering open questions regarding the nature and possible evolution of SNe Ia progenitors. The observations take excellent advantage of the two optical instruments available on SOAR, and we have an active team who will be reducing the data as it is taken allowing for immediate feedback on instrument performance to the SOAR team.
