With the advances of drilling technology and the exhaustion of easily accessible oil fields, newly discovered oil reservoirs are located at ever increasing depths. Exploitation of such oil reservoirs is not only very expensive and technologically demanding but also requires additional efforts in compositional grading modeling. As temperature and pressure increase with depth, the oil reaches critical conditions typically around -4000 m where phase separation can be eventually be observed. Recent works suggest that thermal diffusion (Soret effect) can have a significant impact on the composition grading of oil reservoir in near critical conditions. Lack of knowledge of the magnitude of thermal diffusion may lead to an incorrect location of the limit between oil and gas (Gas Oil Contact) and to an inaccurate estimation of oil and gas in place. Compositional grading in oil reservoir is induced by gravitational and thermal forces. So far, neither satisfactory theoretical model of thermal diffusion nor reliable measurement of thermal diffusion coefficients is available. In this paper, we illustrate the potential impact of thermal diffusion on the compositional grading of a real oil reservoir and we outline the objectives the SCCO (Soret Coefficient in Crude oil) project.
