Microelectronics are plagued by transient malfunctions due to radiation. Past studies to measure and model the complex radiation environment of space have been ineffective. A nuclear particle detector on the same order as the size of the sensitive volume in modern electronics would solve measurement and modeling problems of past studies. This dissertation provides the background for the use of microvolume sized detectors. A prototype was designed, built, programmed and demonstrated. Topics of parallel interest are also discussed.
