Bremsstrahlung X-ray measurements of intense electron microbursts during a period of strong substorm activity were taken at subauroral latitudes on July 31, 1973. Temporal and spectral features of individual microbursts could be examined in differential energy windows (25-50, 50-75, 75-100 keV) because of the time resolution of the X-ray data. The FWHM duration of a typical microburst was about 150 msec. Periodic spacings in multiple microbursts were on the order of 0.5 sec. These characteristic times fall at the low end of the range observed for higher-altitude microbursts. Microburst substructure is examined. The model used assumes that wave turbulence during microburst events is sufficient in the magnetosphere to drive trapped electrons to the strong diffusion limit in cyclotron resonance.
