Scientific paper

Action principles for magnetohydrodynamics(MHD) are used to describe the interaction of both linear, non-WKB waves and fully nonlinear waves with a non-uniform background plasma flow. The Euler-Lagrange equations for the background and wave variations are combined to give the exact total momentum and energy equations for the system of waves and background plasma. Noether's theorems and conservation laws are discussed.
