We call attention to a technique for fitting least-squares polynomials which is compact, fast, allows easy application of common statistical tests, requires only single precision arithmetic, and otherwise avoids the numerical difficulties associated with the classical formulations. The approach seems particularly suited for on-line experiment control and other small computer applications. As a specific example, we discuss the problems of fitting dispersion solutions and subsequently identifying unknown spectral lines.
