Methods of determining cosmic element abundances in stellar atmospheres are discussed. Attention is given to the curve of growth method, atmospheric models, and spectrum synthesis, and the need for hydrodynamic over radiative models is noted. Sources of errors in determining stellar abundances are considered, including instrumental and observational sources of errors, atomic data including the uncertainty of f values, and interpretation. The determination of abundances in the interstellar medium and in external galaxies is also discussed.
