Two methods for developing a local-vertical reference on the basis of
measurements made by a satellite-borne IR scanner are examined and
compared: (1) a sequential-analysis method and (2) a method involving
the localization of the main signal maximum. It is shown that the second
method has substantial advantages over the first.
