Mars Surface: Rocks
Scientific paper
The article considers the possibility of identifying rocks on the surface of Mars with the use of penetrators. A complex of experiments is described, which is proposed to conduct with penetrators for determining the chemical composition and physical properties of the rocks. The selected complex of measurable characteristics of the rocks is based on studies of terrestrial magmatic rocks of different compositions and ages. The article describes the principles of the procedures for classing and identifying magmatic rocks without taking samples but by processing the results of measurements based on modifications of factor analysis. It also studies the informativeness of a number of petrophysical and petrochemical characteristics of rocks, and the probability of classing families of magmatic rocks according to individual characteristics and their combination. Permissible measurement errors of individual characteristics are established. It briefly describes the results of trials in northern Kazakhstan of a part of the equipment complex intended for installation in the penetrators. Tests of the equipment demonstrate the possibility of getting the required accuracy in the determination of the rocks' characteristics.
