Three problerms are considered on the basis of a theoretical model: (1) the calculation of the distribution of metastable O(1D) in comet atmospheres with H2O and CO2 parent molecules in the direction toward the sun; (2) the analysis of the rate of emission of the O I 6300-A red line and the determination of the collisional deactivation profile of O(1D); and (3) the determination of the contribution of deactivation processes to the distribution of the OH and O(3P) daughter molecules. Results indicate that metastable oxygen O(1D) is an important component of water-rich comets.
