We present an overview and early results on a continuing large-scale project to examine spectra of solar-type stars in the solar neighborhood out to 60pc. Physical parameters for approximately 4,000 stars have been determined and these are used to generate synthetic spectra. We have developed computer programs to help automate the process from synthetic spectrum generation to metallicity determination. Initial metallicity estimates for almost 3,000 stars have been calculated based on low resolution spectra. Results from this project will be useful in answering questions about chemical homogeneity in the solar neighborhood, developing age-metallicity relationships, and in identifying candidate stars for future planet-hunting projects. This work has been supported by NSF grants AST 00-86576 and 02-39518.
