The UCSC Physics Department has made a concerted effort to increase the size, quality and diversity of its graduate program. A primary effort has been in increasing the level of mentoring of our students. In addition to the Graduate Committee that handles the routine operations of the graduate program as well as the monitoring of student progress, we have a Mentoring Committee which specializes in addressing a range of problems encountered by students. We have attempted to create a productive and supportive atmosphere attractive to students, particularly students from underrepresented groups. We have successfully strengthened the graduate program and we have maintained an average time to the Ph.D. degree of five years. Through the Graduate Student Committee, the students take an active role in the recruitment of new graduate students and in activities that help to build a sense of community within the Department. Strategies that have proven effective in mentoring and in recruitment will be discussed. One effect of the supportive atmosphere is a general satisfaction of graduate students with the program. This, in turn, reinforces our recruitment efforts.
