Prof. Clegg said that the Book of Genesis description 'Let there be light' is not unrepresentative of our understanding of what actually happened at the beginning of the universe. His talk focused on three twentieth-century cosmological discoveries: first, that the universe is very much larger than our own Galaxy; second, the expansion of the universe; and third, the CBR. He outlined three cosmological models - the standard, hot big bang and inflation - and described the implications of recent observations for the origin of large-scale structure.
