A physical mechanism for the observed acceleration of matter within Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars is proposed. It is shown that if the luminosity of a WR star is greater than a certain critical value, free electrons can be accelerated to supersonic velocities in regions where taue is much greater than 1 (where taue is the velocity of matter at the photospheric boundary). It is also shown that estimates of luminosity and distance of a WR star can be derived on the basis of the above condition.
