It is suggested that the main ionospheric trough is formed as the result of the rotation of the magnetic pole about the geographic pole. This leads to the formation of a sickle-shaped region into which neither solar radiation nor auroral ionization penetrates in the course of the entire polar night. The qualitative picture of the formation of the trough is shown to be in agreement with model calculations and vertical-sounding data.
