Recently, we have developed and calibrated the Synthetic Field Method (SFM) to derive the total extinction through disk galaxies. The method is based on the number counts and colors of distant background field galaxies that can be seen through the foreground object; it is the only method capable of determining total extinction without a priori assumptions about the dust properties, its spatial distribution, or the geometry of the background objects. Here, we investigate how a 20 to 30-m, diffraction- limited, optical telescope in space would improve the determination of opacities with the SFM in Local Group objects.
