We propose to measure the distance to the clocked x-ray burster GS 1826-238 by measuring the burst-induced temporal variability of the x-ray scattering halo. When combined with the bolometric flux measured simultaneously with Chandra and RXTE, this will yield the absolute bolometric luminosity from this object for both the persistent and burst emission. This novel and very powerful technique for absolute distance determination will provide a measurement of the neutron star radius as well as the fraction of the neutron star surface involved in the persistent, steady state hydrogen burning. It is important to establish this method of distance determination since it could have wide applications for variable sources.
