This paper will discuss innovations in speed measurement using accelerometers and neural networks developed for the French/Russian Mars Balloon guiderope or 'SNAKE'. Test results will be presented to demonstrate the correlation between accelerometer signatures and surface terrain type. These results will then be discussed in the context of the Mars '96 mission. Possible applications to other planetary rovers will be the final area of discussion.
