Although magnetic fields are widely believed to play an important role in a host of astrophysical processes, there are currently very few direct measurements of the strength of the magnetic field in the neutral atomic medium. While it has long been appreciated that the Zeeman effect in the HI 21cm line provides a means to measure the magnetic field strength, the observations are very challenging and require high sensitivity. Most of the existing measurements are from single dish telescopes, which are susceptible to large systematic errors. We propose here to use the ATCA to search for the Zeeman effect in the Galactic HI 21cm absorption line towards the source PKS 1814-637. The strength and narrow width of the absorption line as well as the relatively low antenna temperature in the direction of the source, make this an excellent sightline for Zeeman measurements. We request a total time of 28 hours, which should allow us to detect a 10uG field (parallel component) at ~ 5 sigma level.
